FLICKINGER Over His Years (From 7 to 77)

This summer, Prémontrés Abbey presents the first Paul Flickinger retrospective. Take a journey through the work created “over his years” and discover this prolific artist who never stopped questioning and exalting the human being.

A regular on the walls of Prémontrés Abbey, Paul Flickinger returns with a colourful retrospective. Through an exhibition display that invades the monument, the indefinable artist chose to mirror the multiple facets of his work, with the centre pieces on view in the gardens and the abbey church.

With a jovial spirit, Paul Flickinger explores different themes relating to the human being. He examines the Man of today to uncover the values, concerns and excesses of our time. His series "Man in the Making" is a magnificent example of his fondness for re-creation and leads the observer to see themselves in the ten statues portraying freedom, love or knowledge.

An artist that's "both popular and contested, sometimes classic and sometimes radical," he readily cites the great masters of art who influenced him, while retaining a strong desire to separate himself from them. Awed by the expressive language of the Issenheim Altarpiece (Unterlinden Museum in Colmar), he created variations on Mathias Grünewald's work: a visual and chromatic exercise allowing him to examine his creativity. With his imagination as a guide, he combines themes and original materials, such as Altuglas®, in a never-ending search for new challenges.
