The Premonstratensian community of Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois arrived in Pont-à-Mousson around 1608 and built the majestic abbey a century later. In the 19th century, the abbey was used by a minor diocesan seminary before serving as a civilian and military hospital beginning in 1912. The building was heavily damaged in 1944. In 1964, after considerable reconstruction, the abbey became a cultural centre for diverse activities.
The 3 gardens of the abbey

During the spring and summer, the cloister garden, known as the Scent Garden, flaunts a bouquet of fragrant plants and flowers used for making perfume. Since its creation in 2009, the garden has become a popular spot for its peacefulness, colour palette and diverse wildlife.
In March 2018, a French garden was created at the base of the grand façade of the cour d'honneur. Topiaries fill the flower beds of this formal style garden, decorated with obelisks, benches and Anduze vases.
Just nearby is the Moselle Garden along the banks of the river. This rural garden is perfect for relaxing and enjoying a quiet break with a lovely view of the monument and the town of Pont-à-Mousson.
