Workshop

Introduction to sumie

Sumie is a traditional technique based on black ink drawing. During a 2 hour-long workshop, the public will be able to discover the history of sumie, use of equipment (rice paper, brush, ink), Japanese language and culture alongside Rei Hayashimoto.

Originated from China, like calligraphy, sumie was transmitted to Japan under the Kamakura era (12th - 14th century) under the zen influence. This movement is characterized by the use of the wash which is the use of one color diluted with black ink to obtain more shades of black and grey. Landscapes are the predominant subject of sumie.
