Exhibition

Timeless Baroque

from sacred art to David Belugou

To start off the year, Prémontrés Abbey presents “Timeless Baroque”, an exhibition that brings together the splendour of sacred art and the contemporary works of world-renowned artist David Belugou.

The exhibition is an encounter with the Baroque style, focusing on the aesthetics of this artistic trend that originated in Italy in the mid-16th century. By staging 17th and 18th century works in clever ways, the major elements of the Baroque style are put into the forefront: the illusionist aspect, the power of suggestion and the idea of contrast. In the style of a church, the exhibition rooms become a sacred setting, with a harmonious combination of chalices, religious clothing, candlesticks with seven branches, reliquaries, paintings, sculptures and engravings depicting the lives of the Saints.

Linking the past and the present, an impressive portrayal of Saint George slaying the dragon is displayed head-to-head alongside the contemporary creations of David Belugou. At a crossroads, this talented and versatile artist comes from the world of theatre and cinema. Here, he borrows Baroque's splendour and shine through a clever interplay of materials and shapes. He creates precious cabinets and decorative panels, expertly using the verre églomisé technique and carefully applying metal leaves of gold, silver and platinum. Citing passages from the Old Testament, he calls on us to evaluate our way of life. The mirror held by Lot's wife before she was transformed into a pillar of salt becomes a telephone, as if denouncing the excessive narcissism of our time.

Through a multitude of works, the exhibition offers a unique, pluralistic vision of Baroque art through time.
