Martial arts : demonstration and introduction

In the context of the exhibition: “Samurai. Myths, cult and culture.”, the Prémontrés Abbey invites you to discover and try out Aikido. Practiced all over the world today, this Japanese martial art can be defined as the way of harmonizing energy. It was created by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 – 1969) and was recognized in 1904. This technique uses hand to hand combat, projections and weapons and takes its roots in ancient combat forms used by Japanese warriors.

Exceptionally on june 26th, the Aikido clubs of Pont-à-Mousson, Nancy and Montigny-lès-Metz will take place on tatamis installed in the Abbey church. Demonstrations will be in the spotlight, including hand to hand combat and handling of the following traditional Japanese weapon : stick (jô), knife (tanto), and wooden saber (Ken). There will also be demonstrations of Laido, the art of unsheathing and cutting with a saber.

Following that, the public will be invited to try out this discipline based on defensive techniques taught by experienced teachers. These introductions without any requirement are open to adults and children of age 11 and above. A family activity you must try !
